School Leadership
Mr. Zoia is the founder and Executive Director of KIPP Academy Lynn. Mr. Zoia grew up in Marblehead and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. After living on a sailboat for a year and traveling the world, he joined Teach for America, where he taught 4th grade in a South Bronx Elementary school for two years. Mr. Zoia then discovered KIPP Bronx where he taught 6th grade science and history for four years. While at KIPP Bronx, he was inspired by what was possible in education. Mr. Zoia was selected as a KIPP Leadership Fellow and trained to bring KIPP back home. Now in his sixth year at KAL, Josh has moved into the Executive Director role. Josh lives in Lynn, MA with his wife Pat and his two children, Jabali and Maya.
Ms. Breen grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Environmental Science. She began her teaching career in 1996 as a Teach for America corps member in Washington Heights, New York. After fulfilling her 2 year TFA commitment, she moved on to KIPP Academy in the Bronx, where she taught 7th and 8th grade science, math, and English for five years. She moved to Virginia and taught math and science in a public school for one year before moving back to Massachusetts in 2004 to help found KIPP Academy Lynn as the 5th grade math teacher. In 2006, Ms. Breen was promoted to the role of Assistant Principal of KAL, and recently took on the role of Principal. She lives in Lynn with her husband Nat.
Ms. DeAngelo holds a Bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences from Colby College. She spent two years in Phoenix, AZ teaching math to 9th - 11th graders as a Teach for America corps member. During this time, she helped initiate the International Baccalaureate Program and served as the head girls' cross country coach and the JV girls' basketball coach. She has been teaching 7th grade math at KAL since 2006. She coaches the boys' KAL basketball team, who won the Charter School Cup tournament 2009. Ms. DeAngelo's success as a math teacher was celebrated in the summer of 2009 when she was awarded the prestigious KIPP Excellence in Teaching Award. Ms. DeAngelo has recently been awarded a Fisher Fellowship – a prestigious fellowship to prepare teachers for school leadership, and will be the incoming High School Principal.
Emily has been at KIPP since 2005. Before joining KAL, she taught for two years in the 9th Ward in New Orleans at the middle and elementary levels. At KAL, she has been lucky enough to work with different grade levels in different subject areas. She loves teaching 5th graders, and she is equally excited about her new additional role as Assistant Principal-Elect for the KAL middle school.
Caleb taught in rural NC from 1996-2009. He was a member of the first Fisher Fellows class in 2000 and opened KIPP Gaston College Preparatory as its principal in 2001. The school opened with eighty fifth grade students in red clay peanut field and has grown to serve over 650 students in grades 5-12. Dolan was middle school principal and teacher there for eight years and was able to see the school send all 48 of its graduating seniors to college in the fall of 2009 with over two million dollars in scholarships. Caleb lives in Boston, MA with his wife Joanna and 2-month old daughter Tallulah, and is a native Mainer. He currently serves in a dual role as KIPP Foundation's Director of Principal Development and KIPP Lynn's Dean of Instruction.
Mr. Jones graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in history. He spent 3 ½ years in rural Virginia running special-education programs at the middle and elementary school levels. He was a member of the founding staff at KAL, where he started as a sports and special education teacher. Since 2005, Mr. Jones has been teaching physical education full-time and coaching basketball. His varsity girls' basketball team was undefeated in league play in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and won the MA Charter School Basketball League tournament in 2008,2009, and 2010 as well as the Charter School Cup Invitational tournament in 2009 and 2010. Mr. Jones has served as the Dean of Students for KIPP Academy Lynn since 2007.
After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia, Mr. Brown served as an 8th grade middle school history teacher through 2006. He moved to Boston to join KAL as an 8th grade History teacher in 2007, and recently moved into his current role as Director of Multicultural and Community Affairs, where he oversees all adult educational programming and community outreach. He dedicates his personal and professional life to improving the quality of life in inner city communities by educating the youth and motivating them to reach for the stars. He continues his mission of training young boys to be powerful, positive, and productive young men by advising an all-male honor society entitled "AMISTAD DE CABALLERO" meaning "Brotherhood of Gentlemen." Mr. Brown also holds a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Boston College.
Beth has been teaching at KIPP Lynn since 2007. Before coming to KAL, she spent three years teaching in an urban middle school in Houston, TX.
Sarah joined the KIPP Lynn staff in 2007, and she is thrilled to be back on the East Coast where she grew up. Before coming to KAL, Sarah taught high school English at a large urban public school in Phoenix through Teach for America. Ms. Tressel brings her many talents to KIPP, including creative writing, dancing, outdoor sports, and competitive limbo.
Joel has been teaching at KIPP Academy Lynn full-time since 2006. Before coming to KIPP, he taught grades K – 5 for seven years. He is originally from Vermont where he earned a Bachelor's degree in business. He works with 7th grade students and supervises special services (special education) at KIPP Lynn.
Ms. Rosado was educated in the first class of KIPP Bronx. She attended Deerfield Academy on a full academic scholarship, and recently graduated from Brown University. She joined KIPP Lynn in 2009 as the Director of Alumni Support, where she can apply her experience of being a KIPP alumna to helping our alumni in their transition to and through high school and college.
Joan joined the KIPP Lynn team in 2006. Her background involves working with culturally diverse and at-risk children and adolescents in a variety of settings including outpatient, residential and middle/high school levels. She also has experience with on-call crisis intervention, providing supervision for staff, vocational counseling, and coordinating all social services in multi-cultural settings.
Board of Directors
Mr. Fredell has served as KIPP Academy Lynn's Board Chair for three years. He is a serial entrepreneur and a pioneer in the Software-as-a-Service space. In 1997, he developed the world's first solution for managing mergers & acquisitions M&A) online, which quickly became the premier solution for sharing information online in a trusted environment. Most recently, he co-founded a new media company that is innovating in the online marketing space. He has also authored and contributed to multiple books on collaboration, internet, and Microsoft Windows technologies. He lives in Sherborn, MA with his wife and three children.
Ms. Davis was one of the first Board members of the KIPP Academy Lynn Board and continues to serve as Assistant Board Chair. In 2007, Ms. Davis became the President and CEO of the National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL), an organization dedicated to expanding and modernizing the American school calendar to meet the needs of student in the 21st Century. Prior to that, Ms. Davis was co-founder and president of Massachusetts 2020, an education organization dedicated to expanding learning opportunities for children across Massachusetts. For the last twenty years, she has held numerous positions at the federal, state and local levels focused on improving educational opportunities for children across the United States. Her previous positions have included U.S. Department of Education Deputy Assistant Secretary; Special Assistant to U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley; Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the National Governors Association; and the Executive Director of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino's after-school learning initiative. Ms. Davis lives in Lynn, MA with her husband and daughter.
Mr. Kendall is currently serving his second year on the KAL Board. He is partner in Goodwin Procter LLP's Private Equity and Technology Companies Group, and focuses his corporate finance and securities practice on private equity and venture capital transactions, mergers and acquisitions, public securities offerings and representing emerging growth companies. He advises a variety of companies in industries including software, information technology, telecommunications, information services, biotechnology, healthcare, financial services, and retail. Mr. Kendall is listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America, Boston's Best Lawyers, and has been recognized as a Massachusetts "Super Lawyer." Mr. Kendall is a graduate of Boston University School of Law and Boston University Graduate School of Management. Mr. Kendall resides in Dover, MA with his wife and children.
Ms. Boudreau has served on the KAL Board for over two years. She is Director of Investor Relations for New Profit Inc., a national venture philanthropy fund that provides financial and strategic resources for social entrepreneurs seeking to scale their innovations across the country. In this role, her primary responsibility is to ensure New Profit's investors (donors) are well informed of the current activities of New Profit and its portfolio organizations. Prior to New Profit, Ms. Boudreau served in fundraising positions at Babson College and Providence College and as a manager for a venture capital firm. She lives in Newton with her husband Patrick, and their newborn son PJ.
Ms. Goldman has been involved in KIPP Academy Lynn for nearly three years, and has served on the Board for the past two terms. She is a partner in Plan B Ventures, providing funding to emerging Cleantech companies. She is the co-founder and former Executive Director of Friends of Yemin Orde, the US support organization for the Yemin Orde Youth Village in Israel, home to more than 500 disadvantaged youth. Barbara has also served as Director of Development at Cohen Hillel Academy, and has been active in a variety of North Shore community organizations. She holds a B.S. in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from NYU School of Law. Ms. Goldman is a resident of Marblehead, MA.
Mr. Leschly has served on the KAL Board for over three years. Stig Leschly is the founder and managing partner of the Newark Charter School Fund, an operating foundation financed by national philanthropies – including Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, the Robertson Foundation, and the Doris & Donald Fisher Fund -- to support public school reform in Newark, NJ. Formerly, Mr. Leschly was a lecturer at Harvard Business School where his research and teaching focused on entrepreneurship and education reform. From 1997 to 2000, Stig was the CEO and founder of Exchange.com, an early competitor to eBay.com, which was acquired by Amazon.com in 1999. He holds a BA in Comparative Literature from Princeton University, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Mr. Leschly lives in Brookline, MA with his wife Sharon and three young daughters.
Ms. McLaughlin was recently appointed to the KAL Board. She currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer at Education Pioneers, and has extensive management experience in for-profit, and non-profit organizations. Prior to joining Education Pioneers, Frances was a Senior Director at the Broad Foundation, a Los Angeles-based venture philanthropy firm. At Broad, she was responsible for the foundation's investments in organizations which build leadership capacity in public education. Ms. McLaughlin previously served as Executive Vice President of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), a nonprofit organization and market leader in the fields of study abroad and international student exchange. In addition to developing new business activities, over the course of her ten years at CIEE, she also served as Chief Operating Officer of the organization's largest division, managing operations in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. Prior to CIEE, she was the Director of North American Marketing and Sales for the EF International Language Schools, and also worked as a Regional Director for Teach for America. Frances has a Bachelor's degree in history and art history and an Executive Management Certificate from Columbia University. Frances lives in Amesbury, MA, with her husband, Will, and daughter, Georgia.
Mr. Sanders is a Director at Bain Capital, a global investment firm. Prior to joining Bain Capital, he was an associate Partner at McKinsey & Company's Palo Alto office, where his client work focused on strategy/growth and corporate finance. His professional experience also includes positions in sales management and with other consulting firms. Nathan received an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a BS in MIS and Entrpreneurship from the University of Arizona. He has been involved with KIPP Lynn for 2 years. In addition, he is actively involved with Social Venture Partners and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. When not spending time with his family, Nathan enjoys cycling, cooking, and exploring New England.
Mr. Sarazen has served on the KAL Board for three years and currently leads the Facilities Committee for the KAL capital campaign. He is the Global Life Sciences Markets Leader for Ernst & Young, managing the firm's global marketing, communication and go-to-market strategies for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medtech industries. Scott has enjoyed over 20 years of experience working directly and indirectly in the life science industries. Prior to joining EY, his career included roles with Straumann, North America and Genzyme Corporation. Scott has also served in public economic development roles, advocating for the expansion of the biomedical industries for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and as a consultant to the City of Boston. He serves on the board of advisors for the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and is active with the Mass Biotechnology Council. He was named one of Boston's 40 under 40 Business leaders by Boston Business Journal. Mr. Sarazen is a resident of Marblehead, MA.
